We were hired to shoot a women’s health feature for VIV Mag’s first iPad-capable issue. We produced stills that, with the click of a mouse, turned into moving art that incorporated cover lines and a full-length article. To view the piece, go here.

Alexx Henry, on Magazines and Motion

This whole convergence thing kinda makes my head explode a little — especially with the lighting ramifications.

We get a peek at exactly that in this “Living Magazine Spread,” by Alexx Henry. In it, the whole crew — continuous light and all — has to keep up with a triathlon runner. Yikes.

But for those of you interesting in the convergence of still and video, it’s certainly worth five minutes. And if any magazines are still around in five years, they are gonna be awesome.

Amazing New iPad Digital Moving Magazine Shot on the RED

Good friends of planet5D (sister site of planetiPad), Alexx Henry and Andrew Gant (of Alexx Henry Photography) sent us the information on their latest Apple iPad project, an incredible Digital Magazine concept that they shot on the RED camera. Viv magazine asked them to produce the digital cover and feature spread for the iPad.

“Together with co-directors Cory Strassburger and Ming Hsiung, we produced a motion magazine cover and feature spread for Viv Mag – an all digital magazine, which would allow us to create content that will be able to live on the iPad and other tablet devices where digital magazines can live.”

Now, wouldn’t you love to view a magazine like that?

By the way, Alexx and his crew have been doing this kind of stuff for a while. We first met Alexx at the Collision Conference last fall out in LA and his work is just stunning. They showed this demo on the large movie screen.

And my first exposure to Alexx was with this living poster that they also produced on the RED.

Using the Red One and 5D Mark II to Create Living Magazines

Magazines are going down the crapper as a medium, but the crew at Alexx Henry photography envisions a world where OLED and eInk screens put motion into mags and makes them cutting-edge.

Is this what the future of publishing looks like? Well, I’d be pretty surprised if these techs became anywhere close to disposable anytime soon. Instead, we’ll be seeing things like the Apple Tablet and Microsoft Courier coming along to load up stuff like this. But despite the packaging differences, the finished product loaded on these next-gen displays could be pretty similar to this. And it looks pretty badass. [Living Art Media]

Magazines On The iPad Could Be Stunning Visual Treats

Magazines, including Wired, Glamour, Vanity Fair, and the New Yorker, are prepping content for the iPad, with many predicting Apple’s tablet device could be a boon for the publications’ flagging circulation.

Wired released a demo of its iPad edition (see it here) and although the graphics impress, a video from Alexx Henry Photography pushes the boundaries even further.

Alexx Henry’s concept for an iPad edition of Viv Mag presents an interactive, multimedia feast that seems part magazine, part movie. Although the clip seems too complex (and expensive, we imagine) to become standard fare, the clip nonetheless offers a look at what might be possible in bringing magazines to Apple’s new device.
